Setiap bulan, ribuan fresh graduate IT masuk ke pasar kerja.
Setelah mengamati ratusan kasus, pola kesalahannya hampir selalu sama. Berikut 7 kesalahan paling umum — dan cara memperbaikinya.
Pasar kerja IT memang semakin kompetitif.
Every month, thousands of fresh IT graduates enter the job market. But only a small percentage managed to get a job in the first 3 months. The rest? Stuck in a mentally exhausting spiral of proposals without replies.
After observing hundreds of cases, the error pattern is almost always the same. Here are the 7 most common mistakes — and how to fix them.
1. CVs that Don't Tell Stories
Theaverage CV fresh graduate contains: name, address, GPA, course list, and "can Microsoft Office". HRD reads dozens of CVs like that every day. Nothing flashy, nothing memorable.
What should be on your CV: a real project. Not an ordinary academic project, but something that shows you can solve problems. "Creating inventory management applications for local SMEs with Laravel and MySQL" is much more powerful than "Having studied Laravel on campus".
2. Apply to All Positions Without Selection
Many fresh graduates apply to 50 companies at once with the exact same CV and cover letter. The result: everything feels generic, nothing feels personal.
Better to apply to 10 companies with in-depth research: study their products, mention specifics in a cover letter, and show that you really want to join here — not anywhere.
3. Missing or Inaccessible Portfolio
Listing "have a portfolio on GitHub" but the linksare private, or all empty repositories, is the same as not having a portfolio. Even worse — showing you're not thorough.
Minimum must-have: 2-3 projects that are deployed and can be immediately tried online, clear READMES, and neat code (at least with comments).
4. Cannot Explain Own Code
This often happens to those who learn from YouTube tutorials or copy-paste from StackOverflow. When the technical interview, asked "explain how you handle authentication in this project" — can not answer.
Make sure that every line of code you write in the portfolio, you really understand why that is. If you don't understand, don't include it.
5. Ignoring Soft Skills
Companies aren't just looking for people who can code. They are looking for people who can work in teams, communicate clearly, and want to learn. In the interview, how you explain the problem and solution is as important as the technical answer.
6. Unrealistic Salary Expectations
In 2025-2026 market conditions, fresh graduates who request 10-12 million without professional work experience will be immediately passed. Understand market ranges, start with reasonable numbers, and focus on long-term growth.
7. Stop Learning After Graduation
Technology is moving fast. Fresh graduates who still use the stack learned 2 years ago on campus, without any updates, feel "stale" in the eyes of the interviewer. Show that you're constantly learning: take a course, contribute to open source, or write a technical article.
The IT job market is indeed increasingly competitive. But candidates who avoid the 7 mistakes above still have a big chance — because there are still many competitors who make all those mistakes.
